When I saw the movie ‘Man on Fire’ listed on my cable tv listings I was skeptical of what to expect because of the title. I just so happened to watch the movie out of boredom and what quite delighted with what I saw. I was happy with such a good selection on my DirectTV and also with the directv rebate I got with my tv plan.
‘Man on Fire’ contrary to my initial belief was much more than just an action movie. While ‘Man on Fire’ does feature some great action elements to primary focus is around a body guard who takes an assignment to protect a young girl in Mexico City, Mexico. The story is much more about drama, the human ability to connect and feel and finally how people will do just about anything for money even it costs them everything.
I particularly loved the acting on Denzel Washington who plays the bodyguard in Man on Fire. I had never thought of Denzel Washington as being appropriate for a part such as a bodyguard who develops an emotional attachment for his client but in this particular movie he does an excellent job at portraying emotion. As the movie progresses some action elements do present themselves and the director does a great job at incorporating these elements without making the movie a blood bath.
The movie has a lot of story twists and points that I really enjoyed including how the young girls father (who betrayed her) takes his own life because of the shame he feels for what he has done. It was a good decision by the director to incorporate this element and it certainly drives emotion and feeling into the story and the situation. The ending made the movie all the more worth watching although it was incredibly upsetting it was not completely unexpected. It is a great example of how we sometimes have to sacrifice ourselves for the greater good even when it shouldn’t be our responsibility.
