The Effects of Inflammation on Overall Health

Inflammation is a localized physical condition recognized by redness, swelling, pain and sometimes the feeling of warmth. It is often the result of injury or infection. Some forms of inflammation are obvious, such as arthritis. Other forms of inflammation, like heart disease, are hidden and only revealed through medical tests.

Inflammation is not always a bad thing. If your immune system is responding according to its natural design and is healing an injury or fighting an infection, this is short term and not harmful. Chronic inflammation, on the other hand, is a result of many different types of diseases and health conditions. This type of inflammation can create a variety of complications.

A heart attack or stroke can be triggered by the body’s reaction of using inflammatory chemicals to attack fat build-up in arterial walls that results in the release of a blood clot. This is a deadly form of inflammation. Prevention is the best method in this case. Practice healthy living by eating a heart healthy diet and exercising regularly.

Doctors are convinced that inflammation and type 2 diabetes are connected but are uncertain how. The theory is that obesity triggers a type of inflammation which makes it more difficult for the body to produce and use insulin. Here, again, prevention is preferred because there is no cure for type 2 diabetes. Eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly to maintain a healthy weight is key to preventing the development of type 2 diabetes.

Probably one of the most commonly known adverse health conditions caused by chronic inflammation is ulcerative colitis. This is an inflammatory disease of the bowels. When the immune system attacks healthy bacteria in the digestive system, the result is inflammation that is obvious by stomach pain and cramping. A mild diet low in rich spices and acidic fruits can be helpful in lowering the effects of this form of inflammation. It is important to drink plenty of water and eat frequent small meals. It is also advised to avoid greasy, fried foods as well.

Rheumatoid arthritis is another disease caused by confusion within the immune system. Rheumatoid arthritis attacks and damages the body’s joints. They become painful, stiff, and swollen. There is no cure for RA. Patients must then seek methods to minimize and alleviate inflammation.

If you experience a rapid onset of painful inflammation, it could simply be your body’s natural reaction to injury or infection. Use common sense. No matter what the reason for your inflammation may be, remember that in all things related to health, diet matters. Consume a diet rich in whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Eat healthy proteins like fish and chicken, minimizing red meat consumption. Stay active, drink plenty of water and get the sleep your body needs. No one will ever enjoy a life completely free of inflammation, but with a healthy lifestyle, you can manage its affects for a better quality of life.
